We’re a construction based shared apprenticeship scheme operating across South East Wales. We employ apprentices across many construction trades to meet the needs of today’s construction industry.
Become an Apprentice
We employ apprentices while they work towards their diploma or NVQ in their chosen trade. Our shared apprenticeship model means that apprentices get placed with various contractors throughout their apprenticeship, giving them diverse and extensive experience that will help them develop their CV and establish good relationships with a number of potential employers.
We are the first apprenticeship company in Wales to be awarded the We invest in people apprentices accreditation, by Investors in People, following our successful inclusion in their pilot phase which was rolled out in November 2020. We have also been awarded Platinum status, which is the highest accolade available, demonstrating our commitment to achieving performance excellence in the services we provide to the construction industry.
WHAT DO WE LOOK FOR
Enrol into college
We primarily recruit from within colleges So if you're already enrolled into the college course you'd like an apprenticeship in, you're half way there! We can ask your tutors how your attitude, attendance and ability will help towards your placement.
English and Math GCSEs
You don't need to have a grade C or above in Maths or English, but the better your grades are the better chance you have at securing an apprenticeship. You will also not need to sit a key skills course in college while you study towards your NVQ.
It always helps to have some experience of working on site, particularly in the trade you're looking to gain an apprenticeship in.
Have your own transport
This isn't a necessity, however, if you have a driving license and access to your own vehicle it makes it easier for us to find placements for you. If you don't have your own transport, you'll need to use public transport to get to and from your placement.
If you are successful and we invite you to an interview, there are a few personal qualities we will be on the lookout for. Try to demonstrate your willingness to learn, work ethic and enthusiasm!
Why become an Y Prentis apprentice?
Earn while you learn
Our apprentices spend four days on site and one day at college, earning while they learn! We pay above the national minimum wage for apprenticeships, with first year apprentices earning £160 per week and second year apprentices earning the national minimum wage for their age group.
All college fees and essential training is paid for by Y Prentis. We also gift monetary bonuses when apprentice’s complete 50% and 100% of their qualification.
A variety of trades
We offer apprenticeships in a variety of trades, including:
Painting and decorating
Wall and floor tiling
We are always looking to expand our opportunities and may have a new apprenticeship trade in the pipeline.
Ongoing support and personal development
As well as a named mentor on site, we have a team of people that are here to support you if you need it. We will ensure you have everything you need before you start on site, including paying for you to do your CSCS test, providing you with all the essential PPE and gifting you a toolkit worth over £200. There are also lots of opportunities to get involved with our Apprentice Advisory Panel and local career events so that you can help shape how the scheme works and inspire the next generation of apprentices.
Secure full-time employment
The shared-apprenticeship approach gives you lots of opportunities to network with a number of contractors, learn different methods of construction and meet potential future employers. 95% of our apprentice’s secure full-time employment once they have got their qualifications, often with somebody they have worked with during their apprenticeship.

I focus on engaging with schools and colleges across South East Wales, promoting construction as a career path and encouraging a wider range of young people to take up an apprenticeship. I also actively promote our apprenticeship offer, providing ongoing support to our apprentices throughout their apprenticeship.
